Steven Horsford, Representative from Nevada's 4th District

Steven Horsford (Democratic Party) is a member of the U.S. House, representing Nevada's 4th Congressional District. He assumed office on January 3, 2019. His current term ends on January 3, 2025.

Horsford (Democratic Party) is running for re-election to the U.S. House to represent Nevada's 4th Congressional District. He declared candidacy for the general election scheduled on November 5, 2024.

In the 2018 election, Horsford defeated Cresent Hardy (R) to replace retiring incumbent Ruben Kihuen (D). Prior to the 2018 election, both Horsford and Hardy had recently represented the district, which was first created after the 2010 census and held its first election in 2012. Horsford defeated Danny Tarkanian (R) by 8 percentage points in 2012, but Hardy unseated Horsford in 2014 by less than 3 percentage points. In 2016, Kihuen defeated Hardy by 4 percentage points.

Before his first election to the 4th District in 2012, Horsford had served in the Nevada State Senate since 2004. He was Senate majority leader from 2009 to 2012. His professional experience outside of public office includes serving as the executive director of the Culinary Training Academy of Las Vegas.

Horsford was the first black U.S. House member to represent Nevada and the first black leader of the Nevada State Senate.

Horsford was born in Las Vegas, Nevada. He graduated from Clark High School and went on to study political science at the University of Nevada, Reno. After dropping out in order to support his family, he struggled and defaulted on loans, and failed to appear in court. He attributed much of this to a car accident and has since settled all of his debts.
